Rhino 8 upgrade was smooth sailing!

Upgrading to Rhino 8 from my older license was way easier than trying to get a student discount for AutoCAD back in the day. I needed it for some 3D printing preparation and it installed flawlessly on my Windows 11 machine, which meets the recommended 16 GB RAM. Didn't need any promo codes, the upgrade path handled everything perfectly. It's great for reverse engineering tools too.

Rhino's SubD modeling is awesome

grabbed the educational license, and the discount was really substantial, especially for the SubD modeling features. support for RhinoCommon SDK was quick and helpful, really great.

Rhino's great, but what about Grasshopper?

anyone else using Rhino3D for texture mapping? it's really powerful. i'm upgrading from an old license, which saves me some money, not sure how much exactly, but it's not a coupon code type thing. wish the layouts were a bit more intuitive sometimes, but overall it beats SketchUp for what i do.

Rhino 3D for footwear!

I was looking for some new analysis tools for footwear design and ended up browsing Rhino3D. I already own a license, so grabbing the upgrade for Rhino 7 was super easy through my account. It would be nice if there was a simple button on the download page for getting my license key instead of having to dig for it, but overall I'm happy with the purchase.

Thinking of upgrading my old Rhino 5 license to Rhino 8. Is the upgrade discount worth it, or should I just get a fresh new educational license since I'm still a student?

A AmitM 2 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
Definitely check the upgrade path on their site. Sometimes the educational discount is actually better, especially if you're going from a very old version. They usually have a good price for students.

P PoojaR 2 weeks ago
Yeah, I found my student discount for Rhino 7 was cheaper than upgrading my Rhino 6 pro license a few years back. Worth comparing.
6
S Sneha 2 weeks ago
Are educational licenses permanent or do they expire?
8
D Deepak91 2 weeks ago
Also, consider the system requirements for Rhino 8 if you're on an older machine. It can be a bit more demanding.
10
P Priya 2 weeks ago
Mine runs fine on an M1 Mac, but I heard older Windows machines might struggle with Cycles renderer.
3
N NikhilS 2 weeks ago
I heard you can only use educational licenses for non-commercial work. Is that true? Planning to do some freelance stuff soon.
5
S Sneha 2 weeks ago
Good point. I need to look into that too.

R RohanK 2 weeks ago
That's usually the case. Read the EULA carefully. Commercial use with an edu license can get tricky.

Finally made the jump to Rhino 8 from Rhino 7 a couple weeks ago. The SubD tools feel so much more refined now, especially with the creases. It's really making a difference for some of my organic modeling projects.

P PriyaR 3 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
Yeah, the SubD creases were a huge improvement. I was struggling with consistent sharp edges in 7 without getting weird artifacts. 8 handles it way better.

D Deepak91 3 weeks ago
I'm still on 7, debating the upgrade. Is the performance noticeable for general modeling?
3
A AnkitM 3 weeks ago
Totally. And QuadRemesh is a lifesaver for getting clean mesh from scan data or messy imports.
3
S SaraJ 3 weeks ago
I noticed the Cycles renderer is much faster too. My renders are completing way quicker than before. Still not V-Ray fast, but it's a solid improvement for quick previews.
1
D Deepak91 3 weeks ago
Oh, that's good to hear! I mostly use it for architectural viz, so rendering speed matters a lot.
8
R RahulK 3 weeks ago
Agreed, Cycles is definitely snappier. And the new ShrinkWrap command is surprisingly useful for creating quick shells.

M ManojP 3 weeks ago
Did you get the upgrade discount, Vikram? I'm an existing user and wondering if it's still available.
10
V VikramS 3 weeks ago
Yes, I did! Just logged into my account on the Rhino site, and the upgrade price for Rhino 8 for existing users was automatically shown. It was significantly cheaper than a full new license.

Good to know, thanks! I'll check it out this week.

Just got Rhino 8, thinking about diving into SubD modeling. Anyone got tips or resources for getting started, especially coming from traditional NURBS?

R RohanK 1 month ago ✓ Best Answer
SubD in R8 is a game changer! QuadRemesh helps a lot for converting existing NURBS stuff. Check out tutorials by Kyle Houchens, he's got some great series on YouTube.

P Priya 1 month ago
Kyle's videos are solid. His workflow for organic shapes is super helpful.

D Deepak91 1 month ago
QuadRemesh sounds useful, I always struggle with clean mesh topology.
3
R Rahul87 1 month ago
I'm still on Rhino 7, but I heard the SubD tools got a big upgrade in 8. Is the learning curve steep if you're already comfy with NURBS?
12
A Ananya 1 month ago
Not too bad honestly, the concepts are different but the UI is familiar. Just gotta wrap your head around how SubD surfaces behave.
4
T techfreak 1 month ago
Following this. Been meaning to get into SubD for character modeling.

Curious too if it's better than Blender for that kind of work.

Just renewed my Rhino 7 license to upgrade to Rhino 8. The upgrade discount was decent, but I'm wondering if I should have waited for a bigger sale, like around Diwali or something. Anyone know if they do bigger sales usually?

A ArjunK 2 days ago ✓ Best Answer
I've been using Rhino since v5 and the upgrade pricing has always been pretty stable. Don't stress too much, the value you get from Rhino 8 with SubD, QuadRemesh, and the Cycles renderer is worth it. Plus, you get access to all the Grasshopper goodness.
13
A AmitM 2 days ago
That's good to hear, Arjun. Feeling better about it now. Just finished my first model with ShrinkWrap, it's a game changer for cleaning up scans.

M MayaD 2 days ago
ShrinkWrap is truly amazing! Saved me so much time.
5
P PoojaR 3 days ago
I got my Rhino 7 license during a New Year's offer a couple of years back, and that was a pretty good one. For upgrades, the discount is usually fairly consistent. I don't think they slash upgrade prices drastically for seasonal sales like they might for new full licenses.
8
N Neelam 2 days ago
Yeah, usually the big percentage off deals are for new purchases or educational versions.
2
A AmitM 2 days ago
That makes sense. I was hoping for something extra for existing users beyond the standard upgrade path.
6
R Rahul87 2 days ago
I snagged my Rhino 8 educational license during a back-to-school promo. The student discount is always the best bet if you qualify. For professionals, I've rarely seen huge promo codes outside of maybe a very specific bundle deal with a plugin or something.
11
R Rahul87 2 days ago
No, you can't, Suresh. Educational licenses are strictly for academic use, not commercial.
8
S Suresh 2 days ago
Can you use an edu license for commercial work though? Thought there were restrictions.
1
A AmitM 2 days ago
Totally agree. The educational pricing is unbeatable. Wish I still qualified!

My Rhino 8 license arrived today, but I'm having trouble downloading the key. The link in the email just takes me to the product page. Anyone else experience this or know where to find it?

A ArjunR 3 days ago ✓ Best Answer
Check your Spam folder first, sometimes the email with the actual license key gets filtered there. It's usually a separate email from the purchase confirmation.
14
N Neha22 3 days ago
Good point, I'll double check. My confirmation email was fine though.
8
R RiaS 3 days ago
Also, sometimes you have to log into your account on rhino3d.com and find your licenses section. It should be listed there too.

K KaranL 3 days ago
If all else fails, their technical support is usually pretty responsive for license issues. Just shoot them an email with your order number.
4
P PoojaM 3 days ago
They usually reply within a day or two for me.
5
N Neha22 3 days ago
Yeah, I'll probably do that if I can't find it tonight. Was hoping for a quick fix.
6
G GamerRaj 3 days ago
I had a similar issue when I bought my educational license for Rhino for Mac. The key was actually embedded in the download file itself, or it prompted me to log in during installation to verify.

N Neha22 3 days ago
Interesting, I'll try running the installer again and see if it prompts me. Thanks!
